Grooved wall and ceiling panels are the quickest way to get that lined, "built by a joiner" look without lining out every board by hand. Get it right and a sheet goes up in minutes and looks like weeks of work.
The timber-lined look, made simple
Traditional VJ (vertical joint) walls were once individual tongue-and-groove boards nailed up one at a time. Modern decorative panels reproduce that same shadow-line in a full sheet — usually 2400 x 1200mm — with the grooves already machined in. You fix far fewer sheets, the grooves hide the joins, and the spacing stays dead consistent across the wall.
Three profiles cover most jobs. VJ gives you evenly spaced square-shouldered joints for a classic Hamptons or coastal feel. V-groove cuts a shallow V between boards for a softer, more traditional timber-lined look. Random groove spaces the grooves irregularly for a contemporary, seamless timber wall where you don't want a repeating rhythm.

Groove spacing changes the whole character of a room. Tight 100mm spacing reads as fine, formal and traditional; wider 150–200mm grooves feel relaxed and contemporary. On a feature wall, run a quick tape-measure mock-up before you commit — the difference between 100mm and 150mm is bigger than it sounds on paper.

Choose birch ply when you want the timber to show
Birch-veneered decorative plywood keeps a visible timber grain, so it's made to be clear-coated or lightly stained. It's the choice when the wood itself is the feature — pale Scandi walls, warm timber ceilings, joinery-grade fit-outs. Being real plywood, it's dimensionally stable, holds a screw well and takes a crisp machined groove. As non-structural interior plywood it sits under AS/NZS 2270; it is not a structural product, so it lines and decorates rather than braces.
Choose easycraft MR MDF when it's getting painted
easycraft panels are moisture-resistant (MR) MDF, factory-primed and ready for a top-coat. MDF has no grain to telegraph through paint, so you get a perfectly flat, uniform painted surface — ideal for white VJ walls. MR MDF is manufactured to AS/NZS 1859.2; the "MR" means it resists occasional humidity and the odd splash, not immersion. It's the cost-effective, paint-grade path to the same profile.

This is where people come unstuck. Standard decorative panels — birch ply and regular MR MDF — are interior, dry-area products. Behind a vanity, on a hallway feature wall or across a bedroom ceiling, they're perfect. Put them where they'll cop steam, splashes or standing water and they'll swell at the grooves and edges.
For bathrooms, laundries, powder rooms and splashback zones, step up to a purpose-made wet-area panel. easycraft's wet-area VJ is built for these rooms and, installed to the maker's directions with sealed edges and the right paint system, handles the humidity a standard sheet won't. Remember that grooves and cut edges are the weak points for water — every raw edge, cut-out and fixing hole needs sealing before the top-coat goes on.

Getting the spacing and install right
A few habits separate a sharp result from a wavy one:
- Plan the groove layout. Set out from the centre of the wall or a key sightline so you don't finish with a thin, awkward board in the corner. Keep grooves plumb — a laser or level line beats eyeballing.
- Acclimatise the sheets. Stand them flat in the room for a couple of days so the panels settle to the home's humidity before fixing.
- Fix into the grooves. Nails or screws driven down the V are far easier to fill and hide than fixings out on the flat face.
- Mind the join. Line sheet edges up so the last groove of one panel and the first of the next keep the spacing rhythm unbroken — the seam disappears into the pattern.
- Order cut-to-size. Getting panels cut to your wall height (and window or GPO cut-outs pre-machined) means straighter grooves and far less on-site dust. It's worth flagging when you order.
Whichever way you go, decide painted-versus-timber and interior-versus-wet-area first, then the profile and spacing. Those two calls do most of the work.
