How Much Plywood Do I Need? Sizes & Estimating

Ordering plywood is mostly maths, and getting it wrong is expensive in both directions. Order short and you are back at the yard mid-job; over-order and you have full sheets leaning against the shed for the next five years. This guide walks through sheet sizes, a formula for how many sheets you need, how much to add for waste, and when it pays to let us cut the panels for you.

Start with standard sheet sizes

Almost all plywood in Australia is sold in rectangular sheets, and the numbers you plan around are the sheet's face dimensions in millimetres. The default is 2400 x 1200 mm — that is the size most tradies picture and the one most price lists quote. Imported panels (and a lot of film-face formply) come in 2440 x 1220 mm, which looks almost identical but is not interchangeable when you are matching an existing lining.

Work out the area of one sheet before you do anything else: multiply the two dimensions in metres. A 2400 x 1200 sheet covers 2.4 x 1.2 = 2.88 m². That single number drives the whole estimate.

How many sheets do you need?

Start by measuring the area you need to cover. For floors and ceilings, measure length x width of each section in metres and add the sections together. For walls, it is height x width. Deduct only the big openings — a doorway or a large window — and leave small penetrations in, because the offcuts around them rarely become usable pieces anyway.

Then use one line of arithmetic:

Sheets = total area to cover ÷ area of one sheet, rounded up.

Say you are laying a floor of 18 m² in 2400 x 1200 sheets: 18 ÷ 2.88 = 6.25, so you need seven sheets before waste. That figure is a floor, not a final answer — it assumes you can use every square millimetre of every sheet, which never happens once you start cutting around walls and joists.

Always allow for waste and cuts

Two things eat into a sheet: offcuts (the leftover strips that are too small to use) and saw kerf (a blade removes about 3 mm of material with every cut, which adds up across a sheet). The fix is a waste allowance on top of your calculated sheet count.

  • Simple layouts (square rooms, full sheets, few cuts): add around 10%.
  • Average jobs (some fitting around walls, standard cabinetry): add 15%.
  • Complex work (angles, curves, lots of small pieces, grain-matched faces): add 20% or more.

Back to the 18 m² floor: seven sheets plus 15% is 8.05, so order eight or nine sheets depending on how tricky the room is. Always round up — a spare sheet costs a lot less than a second delivery.

Standard vs oversized sheets

Standard 2400 x 1200 sheets are easy to handle, fit most utes and trailers, and suit the vast majority of jobs. But every join between sheets is a potential weak point and a line you can see. On big floors, feature walls and ceilings, oversized sheets — up to 3600 x 1800 mm and beyond — cover far more area per panel, cut the number of joins, and speed up the install.

The trade-offs are weight and access: a large sheet is heavy, awkward for one person, and needs a clear path in. This is exactly where our crane-truck delivery earns its keep — the panels come off the truck where you want them rather than being carried through the house.

When to use cut-to-size

If your finished pieces are an odd size, or you are making a lot of identical parts, cutting full sheets yourself burns time and creates offcuts you will never use. Ordering cut-to-size hands that work to a panel saw that cuts square, repeatable pieces to the millimetre.

Reach for cut-to-size when you want factory-straight, square edges; when you are cutting shelving or cabinet parts in volume; when you do not have a track saw or the space to break down 2.4 m sheets; or when transport is tight and a stack of pre-cut parts loads far more easily than full sheets. It also flips the waste maths in your favour — you pay for the pieces you need, and the offcut is our problem, not yours.
