Overview
Touchwood VJ Veneer Panelling — Genuine Timber Veneer, Tongue & Groove Panels
Touchwood Veneer Panels bring the warmth and grain of genuine Australian native timber into a wall and ceiling panel that installs like a lining board. A real Tasmanian Oak or Blackwood veneer is pressed onto a 9mm PEFC-certified moisture-resistant MDF core with a 100mm vertical-joint (VJ) groove, giving the look of solid timber VJ panelling at a fraction of the weight, cost and installation time of solid boards.
Species & core options
- Tasmanian Oak — light, warm blonde tones with a subtle, straight grain. Suits Scandinavian, coastal and modern Australian interiors.
- Blackwood — rich, warm golden-to-reddish-brown tones with dramatic grain movement. A luxury, high-end feature timber.
- Natural MDF core — a traditional, uniform wood-toned shadow line inside each groove.
- Black MDF core — a pre-dyed black substrate for a sharp, modern black shadow line without needing to paint it.
Applications
- Feature walls and full-room wall lining, residential and commercial
- Ceiling panelling — fixes to battens or existing plasterboard
- Bedheads, kitchen island bench cladding, joinery fronts
- Can be run vertically (increases perceived ceiling height) or horizontally (reads more expansive/modern)

- For new-build stud framework, glue and nail directly to studs/battens at 450mm centres

- Allow a 4mm–10mm expansion gap at top and bottom perimeters
Seen in the wild
Touchwood panels have been specified in projects from Hydro Tasmania's Lake Pedder Lodge in remote Strathgordon, to a 7.5-star energy-efficient family home in Torquay, a Campbelltown shopping centre ceiling (140+ panels in a chevron pattern), and a Thornbury jazz bar finished with a custom walnut-stained, deliberately mismatched Blackwood veneer for a one-off look. The tongue-and-groove system is consistently called out for letting large areas be covered quickly and consistently, even on tight commercial timelines.

FAQ
Can these panels be left raw / unfinished?
No — Touchwood panels must be finished with wax, oil or polyurethane before or shortly after installation. They're supplied raw so you can choose your own finish, but raw and unfinished isn't a usable end state.
Can these be installed directly onto brick or masonry?
Not directly — panels can't be fixed straight to brick, blockwork or masonry. Timber battens need to be fixed to the wall first, spaced about 450mm apart and checked for square, to create a flat fixing frame.
What's the difference between the Natural and Black core?
It's the colour of the MDF substrate showing through the 100mm VJ groove — Natural gives a traditional wood-toned shadow line, Black gives a sharp, modern black line without needing to paint it.
